How do I work out stock units (SU) and my stocking rate?

Use our free Stock units (SU) calculator: enter the head in each class (ewes, hoggets, beef cows, dairy cows, deer, goats and more). Each class starts at a typical New Zealand guide value in SU per head, which you can change for your stock. It shows total SU, SU per effective hectare, the sheep to cattle ratio and how many tonnes of dry matter the farm needs a year - and, if you enter pasture grown, the yearly feed balance. One SU is roughly the yearly feed of a 55 kg ewe rearing a single lamb (about 550 kg DM). Open the stock units calculator →

It shows average pasture cover, whether cover is building or falling, days of feed above residual, the area to graze each day and a feed wedge against your target line. Add last walk's cover as a 4th column to see the growth measured on your own farm, and download the wedge as a CSV for your spreadsheet. It works on your phone, even with no signal once saved. Fonterra forecast $8.50–$10.50/kgMS for 2026/27, midpoint $9.50 (21/09/2026); other milk companies set their own price. A planning tool only - talk to your accountant or bank before making decisions.
